Memory Lane: Malaysia

When I was young my mother handed down to me her extensive postcard collection, which I loved and continued to add to with gusto.  I now have boxes of postcards and find a compulsive need to buy them wherever I go.

A few years ago I got in the habit of writing notes to myself on the backs of these cards rather than writing in journals (I could never get used to carrying them around with me).

Here’s what I wrote to myself at Pangkor Island, off the west coast of Malaysia, in 2010:

  • dozens of hornbills flying overhead
  • rainbows both days
  • fishing (but no fish)
  • signs warning you about the naughty monkeys
  • extra-strong bloody marys
  • naughty monkeys
