Afghanistan, 1800’s

BBC has a cool audio slideshow up of pictures taken in Afghanistan in the late 1800’s.

This is based on an exhibition by the Royal Geographic Society which will be on until February 26, view their website here.

Toward the end of the slideshow there is a photo of a group of Hazaras. The Hazara ethnic group is thought by some to be descendants of the Mongol armies that invaded what is now Afghanistan in the 1200’s. Read more about that here(pdf) and here.

National Geographic has an article on Hazaras today.
